Solstice

A Sonnet - Tribute to the Longest Day of the Year

The heat’s oppressive even in the shade

Bright wavy lines arise from the pavement

Looks like sparks will ignite any moment

Tinder dry woods could be in ruins laid!

Out in the open field, our nerves are frayed

And we stood still, limiting our movement

Solstice! the sun burns in the firmament

The cool evening breeze will be long delayed!

But from the four winds come needed relief

As nimbus clouds from the east shield the sun

A welcome hood, a benevolent thief

Bringing cool rain that we couldn’t outrun

So, we frolicked, our smiles beyond belief

Thankful nature’s blessings never outdone!

June 20 was the summer solstice. The longest day of the year. It is incredibly hot and humid. Thankfully there was an afternoon thunderstorm that brought much welcome relief.
