In the Shadows
Uncertainty, surrounded only by the winds
colorless, shadowless, void -
the sounds move him forward with an awkward gait
tap - tap, no landmarks to guide him
“Step down”, he hears to the left of him
he steps begrudgingly, feeling guided as a child would
resentment - or just displacement?
He sways along the sidewalk with no clear path
Chatter all around him but not directed at him, or is it?
He stops to listen then moves forward once again
The world doesn’t see him as it brushes quickly by
His darkness has become contagious
He finds the steps leading up to his apartment
You could hear him count the stairs under his breath 1,2,3
Finally he is home in familiarity
He folds up his white cane and leaves it by the door.
