We Used to be Lovers

*read top to bottom then bottom to top

there she sits
as unreadable to me as ever
in that shell she made a home
for all i know she could be
peeking between invisible fingers
in fear of how deep the rabbit hole goes
now that there is no going back
i wish i could have done more for her
Lord knows i would have kept trying
i just couldn’t figure out how to play the hero
shackled to the villains seat of her life’s story
what it was i did i do not know
but her struggles grew more and more
anger grew to resentment
declaring that the ends justify the means
we watched her leave
armed to the teeth with feelings
worn raw in pursuit of happiness
determined that her own hero she would be
crossing her final boundary
in that shell she made a home
never to be seen again
there she sits
