Staircase Circles

Too long the staircase circles
Up and down the tower wall.
The candles flicker against the stone
As the servant shuffles through the hall.

The climb is suited to a youthful stride,
One step after another,
As lightning flashes and rain is heard
By the son of another mother.

Oh, would it be that he was not
The child of a Chambermaid.
Instead, the child of the Queen
Then he would not be so afraid.

Climbing these stairs, night after night.
His mother needs food and wine to drink
As long as she’s chained in the castle tower
With nothing to do, but think.

She thinks of the times when she was desired
When the King would whisk her away.
It was exciting, a marvelous ride
‘til the queen was told, one fateful day.

Now the bastard climbs for the very last time
For it’s time to end his mother’s shame,
She’ll drink her wine and drift to freedom
While listening to the blessid rain.
