Understanding

Old Friends

The old woman was knitting, seated on the garden swing,
The afternoon was warm and the garden was cool.
Then she closed her eyes so memories had time to form
And her knitting found its way to the lap of her cotton dress.

Suddenly, a cougar appeared from the shadows of the trees
And moved ever so consciously in the direction of the lady.
The big cat looked from side to side, as if to encounter another,
Then it silently moved to within inches of the woman’s hand.

The woman’s eyes opened and she slowly reached out
Scratching the big cat’s head while talking to her gently.
The cat began purring with a mystifying, rumbling, vibration
And the two shared a moment from memories of the past.

Then the tranquil moment was broken by tiny growls
And three cubs darted out of the bushes, tumbling along.
The old woman looked in that direction, then stated,
“Well, Ms Golden, I see that you have a family this year.”

Then the woman drifted off and the cat turned to walk away.
She’ll go back to the place she belongs and will never return.
For last visits are short ones in passing, with no introductions.
A thing that is well understood by both these ladies in question.
