Over Bottles of Gin

Yes, he’s smart, way smarter than most
Not me of course; though that’s debatable
But now he’s departed to the other coast
A deep sadness I feel; it’s unavoidable!

Rivals we weren’t, but we could have been
Though different, good comrades we became
Friendship forged over many bottles of gin
But soon we lost touch, just a crying shame

Over the years, I’ve wondered what happened
To my friend after last we saw each other
Life intervenes, when the mundane we attend
But memories, the happy ones remain forever

I’m glad I saw him again a few years ago
And it seemed that not much has changed
The friendship remained, the respect also
The status quo it seems, never been rearranged

But now it’s time to say one final goodbye
To a friend from the carefree days of youth
I pray I see him again up in the blue sky
A welcome reunion; ain’t that the truth!

But selfish that I am, a survivor’s envy I feel
For the last few years, many friends have gone
Why not me? It’s a question I can’t conceal
Who’s gonna write about me when all is done?
