Rewriting

“I have rewritten — often several times — every word I have ever published. My pencils outlast their erasers.”
Vladimir Nabokov, Speak, Memory

He read the poems he’s written years ago
Wow! he grimaced for they were terrible
Now he’s worried what he writes tomorrow
Ten years later he’ll find lamentable

Guess he’s become more discriminating
Or his writing skills simply got better
Reviewing old work will be frustrating
If all he’s e’er written just plain clutter

But the good news: he’s got time to rewrite
Perhaps save his verses from the trash can
Bring back his creations to the limelight
And be gratified with all he has done

But for other life mistakes it won’t be as easy
Undoing all of them will never be breezy
