My Best Friend

I once knew a girl
That was my best friend
That always sat in the mirror.
Every time that I looked up,
She was always there.
No matter what time of day.
She knew all my secrets
And all my fears
And never told a single soul.
She was the one I always trusted
In every type of situation.

Only now she looks different.
There is a pleading sadness
That lurks in her eyes,
Her hair is a mess,
Her make up is running.
There are scares that frame
Every inch of her body
That tells me she’s been through too much.
She hides behind that happy face
That everyone has learned to love
But inside I feel her pain
And every emotion running wild.

She makes me push everyone away
She’s not as friendly as she was.
She hates me and I hate her
For making me what I’ve become.
I wish that I could run away
From the face I see everyday
Staring back at me
With those sad eyes
That tells me nothing will be okay.

If I could, I would go back in time.
Change our path,
Make us different.
But I know that she is right.
She has never once stopped
Being my best friend.
