Caricamento in corso...

Last Goodbye

I remembered the rise and fall of your chest
that gloomy afternoon...
I took a closer look at you
in the hospital bed where you lay....
Your beautiful face was swollen
and your eyes stared into empty space.
I was right next to you, but couldn’t see me...

I felt the erratic rhythm of your dying breath.
Your mottled grey, cold hands quivered
when I reached out to hold you.
Your shrunken, darkened tongue moved...
Inaudible sounds followed...
and yet I understood...
It must be the familiarity of our greetings
when we’re together...

I couldn’t see your beautiful smile anymore
and couldn’t feel your awaiting warm hugs.
Deep melancholy surrounded me.
Tears immediately welled up in my eyes
and rushed down my face uncontrollably.

I whispered in your ear with hope
that you could still hear me....
As I uttered my last goodbye,
I bestowed a prayer for you...
...that you would never be alone...
I prayed for angels to be there
and hold your hands to the other
side...
....where Eternal peace awaits.
