Dear Younger Me

Dear younger me
am I who you thought I be?

I don’t, hike my socks up
            like the pros

I don’t, lay my mitt
in the dirt to stop a wicked grounder

I don’t, backpedal in order
              to catch, the game-saving ball

I don’t, say my prayers
before I go into battle with my brothers

I’m not, flying above
              the clouds at supersonic speed

I’m not, running into
burning buildings to save the trapped few

But I will always be there
              for the one or two

The unheard, the unsung
              the unloved and the undone

The big ones
              & the little ones

I will always listen
for the wrestling of the leaves

That reminds me
what the younger me was meant to be

Dear younger me
am I who you thought I’d be
