Milestone rant
As in all men coming-of-age stories there came a few certain milestones.
Moments that were titles of chapters and whole sections of character development rolled from those pages. First in mind would be the losing of ones virginity. Then would have to be your first fight because, what goes together better with mating than primal territorial battle? These two moments are big ones in my mind for one important reason. That reason being man’s similarity to animal. Not what makes us different but what makes us the same. Its that separation between us that is driving all our internal needs deeper and deeper into the recess of the mind. Pushing instinct to the back to make room for a favorite t.v. show.
Another important moment a man can never forget is his first trip solo. Whether it was down the coast in your jeep or on foot in the redwoods that moment of relief and fear mixed together. The realization that it’s just you keeps tingling down the spine while the mind starts to breathe and search for answers. Every inch is a mile. The past rolls through with the wind shortly followed by the sound of the future breaking against now. This moment of being totally alone will often scare the crap out the host. Being solely responsible for yourself makes an adult very quickly.
