The Solitary Wife..

Trimming the wick of the giant candle
the last lighthouse keeper rides the storm
climbing out onto the ledge he exhales a sigh
as the cruel green sea beckons like a lover
one step away from eternity he hesitates
to consider his future,
his prospects his qualifications,
scraps of paper promises, memories, experience
meaningless to all but himself
the tears no longer fall
but are blown sideways
landing on the cliff-top
where they feed the roots
of long forgotten dreams,
long relinquished beliefs

climbing back from the edge
wracked with remorse
at his failure to give himself
to the enveloping sea
knowing at that moment
that the solitary life
was his one true love,
his sole mate and constant companion
he took her hand as she led him down to the boat
it was going to be a stormy night without her!
