MOTHER

I want to speak softly like rain
But I find myself sounding like thunder
This is what it’s like to be a mother... Checking for monsters under the bed
Or treating the lice you have on your head
Applying a Band-Aid on your knee
From missing your step or climbing a tree
Rejoicing, in all the milestones you make
But not wanting you to grow for it makes my heart break
Seeing parts of me that linger in you
Makes me wonder who you might be and what you might do
Pondering and wondering if I made all the right decisions
As the water on the stove boils over in the kitchen
Tripping over toys and cleaning up messes
These are the days you’ll miss
It’s not even a question
Knowing one day you won’t even need me
To clean up your messes or put a bandage on your knee
So I’ll take it all in and love you and your brother
This is what it’s like to be a mother.
