The walls
of the old grey tenement house paper thin
sounds of life escape each apartment
invade another; a cornucopia
of televisions, radios and stereos
compete with each other, interweave chaotically
sounds of lovemaking mingle the cries of babies
a jambalaya of voices reverberate
throughout the building
one voice rises above them all
her voice
shrill scream that pierces the night
a slap, the thud, the whimper and prayer
the walls shrink, recoil from the sudden fear,
shudder against suffered wails
embraces her isolation
Uninvolved, the house grows silent
and desperately still
