The One

Inspired by the poem "The Other" by Ted Hughes. This is the partner's perspective.

You told me it was love if we shared the same heartbeat
But you were just steeling from mine,
and you said love felt like putting your hands on fire, but it takes away and never gives back.
you said you were going to put my trophy on the shelf, but you threw it in the trash.
Because you couldn’t handle that it was for something you haven’t done.

Now I’m standing at my grave
Watching you whipe your tears away
Realizing you killed me with the bloody knife in your hand
You took everything that I had
Now your tears land on my heart
But you don’t miss me cause I’m right here
You’re everything that’s left of me.

You told me balance was key but the difference is I don’t have to fill my heart.
And I jumped off the cliff, but you encouraged me to get close enough.
“...one heart broke, for hands bloody...” but you crashed it with your own anger attack.
when we were going out the church and you promised to take care of it your whole life.

Now I’m standing at my grave
Watching you whipe your tears away
Realizing you killed me with the bloody knife in your hand
You took everything that I had
Now your tears land on my heart
But you don’t miss me cause I’m right here
you’re everything that’s left of me.

You gave me winds but were the only one to cut them at first
Now I regret calling your mother selfish for prefering your brother
You blame my smile for killing you but you were the first to end it
“Just a little” but you ended burying your wife after she killed herself.

Now I’m standing at my grave
Watching you whipe your tears away
Realizing you killed me with the bloody knife in your hand
You took everything that I had
Now your tears land on my heart
But you don’t miss me cause I’m right here
You’re everything that’s left of me
