“Obscured Voices”

Written for a history project

Post war racism persists
through the minds of
our steadfast oppressors.

Seeking chance in choosing who will
pull the strings of our fate,
we fought for God given rights,
yet continue to fall subject to hate.

The streets we should feel safe to walk
have been tainted with filthy stares
guided at a skin color of which we
wish to dispose of.

Their preconditioned ideologies
leave us in the back seat of anything
we wish pursue.
What should a chemical variation in skin mean to you?

An education should no longer be
a matter of intelligence
but that of perseverance.
It belongs in the hands of allowance
and a teacher’s benevolence.

Yet the past keeps the freedman
ignorant and “unclean”
Though freedom had been “granted”
we are still seen as a machine.

If this is freedom, grant the sincerity
of our obscured voices
in this expanse of fabrication.

Present our people as we are.
A vast misrepresentation
of lives worth being given
means to individuality.

The war has not ended our fight,
our freedom is still in the hands of
our steadfast oppressors.
Racism persists.
