Loneliness

Scarred and cynical
Yet cold and lonely

Love can be cruel and treacherous
Yet it is harder to be solitary

A lover all alone
Without love

The thunder claps down violently
Shaking her bedroom window
The lightning bright in the formidable sky

She used to love nights like this
Curled up in bed
Sharing the ferocity of the storm with her loved one
Knowing that while the winds were raging and howling only a few feet away
She was safe, warm and loved

Now lying in the queen size bed
Made for two
Her feet wander to the right side
Cold and stiff
Where a warm body should be

She remembers the days when she thought she had it all:
The house
The career
And most of all the love

She misses the weight of a man’s body lying next to her
Safety in knowing he will be there in the morning

She misses the tenderness of his touch
His arms wrapped around her
Protection from the dark
As she falls into peaceful sleep

She misses her head lying on his strong chest
His life force beating rhythmically
Pounding against her ear

She has so much love to give
Yet no one to give it to
A bed, once warm and welcoming
Now stares at her uninvitingly
Mocking her loneliness

Will there be love for her in the world again?
Does she deserve it?

Just once more
She longs for the feel of a man’s touch
The sensuous moulding of two bodies together

She thought the pain of heartbreak was excruciating
Thought she would never love again

But the real aching is waking up alone every morning
Hearing only the constancy of your heart
Beating to its own solo rhythm
