The Heart

Diving into the ocean heart first
The current surrounds you
Pulling you under
Deeper and deeper
You are drowning

Why do you do this to yourself?
Glutton for punishment
Knowing that venturing down this path
Will open wounds
Once stitched together
The pain forgotten

But now these wounds are ripped open
By the ferocity of the current
Blood spilled
Unnecessarily
Why do you do this?
You are drowning

For when you venture with your heart
You give it all
Ignoring the fact that others may not really care
The way you do
Hearts aren’t often made as large as yours

And when you give this heart away
Again and again
To the undeserving
The stitches come apart
Thread by thread
You are drowning

Soon there will be no heart left
The unfeeling savages devour it
Given something too good
Not knowing that it was something they should treasure

Soon you will be left without a heart
Eaten away by the selfishness of men
There will be a hollow crater
At the centre of your chest
Where your heart once was
You are drowning

A heart that was so deserving of love in return
But who naively gave it away so foolishly
Thinking that there was enough of it to go around

But the heart is a sacred gift
No matter how large
It should be treated with unquestionable respect
Giving it only to the worthy
Who have earned the right to the love that it gives
Who will give their heart in return

For the unloved heart
Is a wasted heart
A wounded heart
A hollow heart
It can only endure so much
