I’m learning to be okay

By: Rafika Pahud

“You are not okay” my mom said.
She is correct. I’m not okay whatsoever.
I lied to myself and I just kept pretending so I have a place to belong.
I don’t know why I’m here at a fake high school just wearing a happy mask to please societal expectations.
I don’t like how society harshly pushes me to figure it out all by lonesome self.
I like eating crab dip and watching the sunset.
I want to be married to a beautiful rich man and move to Costa Rico and eat Casado with him.
I love being happy with my husband and serving him ice cold pink lemonade.
I can’t truly be myself unless it’s around my family and a few close friends.
