Knocking on a Box

I Can’t see a way into this box
There is no lock, and no top.
No door, no open side,
There really is nowhere to hide.

But I’m just knocking on this box,
What is it, in this box?
What does it represent?
I just know I need to be inside.

I’m thinking, what is driving me?
What desires are inside of me?
What is it that is motivating me?
To be knocking on this box.

Can it be a sadness that’s inside of me?
Can it be that I do not want to face the world surrounding me?
Can it be the strife that is lying there inside of me?
Can it be that an answer lies within?

What then is it that I seek?
Will it make me better to discover?
Or will it when it’s found,
Leave me inside, knocking to get out?

Written shortly after the sudden death of my son Chris in 2005. The Box is a metaphor I think for the unknown, for grief, something that cannot be changed, and lots more perhaps....
