A vision in chains

Its so long ago now, my memory of that morning
The air was cold; the mist was lying all around
And then there stood before me, without any warning
And man in chains, weeping and broken down
At first I feared this ghostly sight that before me stayed
I closed my eyes in better hope that this sight would fade
But it did not grow faint and he had the look of hope
Would I then this apparition help its many chains to cope?
What meaning did this have for me, and why then on this day
A time of recollection for one whom no longer comes my way
The many chains he has to carry, they must be broke away
For my hope and understanding would be then on array
Approach was undertaken and the shape he did not move
But this was still an apparition though my hope it did improve
The tears that had been falling were then suddenly addressed
And at my touch the chains of unknown years were then dispossessed
The morning’s mists came clear and I observed my standing place
With my sight restored I looked around but there was nothing to displace
A memory then that for no reason known I am given to embrace
So for many years, through many tears, is my memory of that morning
