Furnaces of Summer

Cool waters in the yards of Neptune
are far, far away from
the searing heat of the sun,
sleeping in the arms of winter’s hideaways,
smoothing out the oceanic highways
for the busy seafarers to sail upon,
rolling with the rhythm of the deep-sea engines,
swaying with the gentle crests and troughs
in cadence to the easy motion of the waves
like the rocking of mother’s arms to sleep.

Seafarer’s paradise is the taming of the wild waters
under the commands of the cool air authorities
that govern the kaleidoscopic seas
that succumb to a higher authority as the
rays of the sun grow increasingly stronger,
strong enough to ignite the furnaces of summer,
the unleashing of the wildness that lives
in the bowels of the malleable waters
that succumb to the authority of the warmth
as it singes the skin of the underwater beast
asleep in the furnace of the cool waters
that grows angrier as the heat intensifies
until it wakes up from its winter’s nap and
rises up to the surfaces in rebellion.

It storms about in a rage that stirs the seas
that ruffles the waters and watches them swirl
and laughs at the ships as they toss and turn.
All hell is broken loose as it rises up
and wreaks havoc as the summer furnaces
run full blast in the searing heat
creating a rhythm in cadence to
the swirling winds above.

Beautiful rhythm of the hurricane winds,
beautiful sight above the skin of the clouds,
beautiful white sea that rides on their backs,
beautiful slow moving circles round and round,
beautiful skyscape that glistens from the upward sun,

Ugly head of the sea beast under the clouds,
ugly smiles from his contorted face,
ugly laughing as he sees what he has done,
ugly rain and spit from his twisted mouth,
ugly winds that speed up more and more
that disrupt the peace of winter’s air,
that keeps pounding the seas until
they become exhausted and fall to sleep.
Goodnight you devil’s advocate
until the warm air comes again
and ignites your furnace
and makes you rise again.
