House on Vulture’s Hill

The haunted house up on Vulture’s Hill,
the site of the McFarland family kill,
when two men fought over a poker game,
drew their guns and then took aim.
They fired their guns 'til one of them dropped.
Then the loser shot his family and wouldn’t stop.

McGregor the culprit, ran away ne’er to come back
and the trees turned gray and the sky turned black.
The robins flew away and the vultures came to roost,
feasting on the rotted bodies as all hell broke loose.
The only sound came from the voices in the wind,
the voices of the dead torturing him for his sin.

“Come back you bastard and pay for what you did.
You can’t go free in the places that you hid.
We know where you are so why don’t you come out?
We have a score to settle and there’s no doubt.”

’Twas the only sound heard from up on Vulture’s Hill,
the eerie sounds from the voices in a shrill,
where the dead wouldn’t stay dead
until McGregor came to justice climbing up ahead;
so the vultures will have another body on their land,
the culprit who murdered the Mc Farland band.

He scaled the hill and climbed up to his fate
as the dead met him at the rusty old gate.
With their axes ready to chop off his head
they swung at him until he fell and lay dead.

After the vultures ate, they all flew away
and the trees began to lose their gray.
And the green leaves came back to root,
and came alive as the sky turned blue.
Then the eerie voices all faded away
as the gentle breeze made the branches sway.

Then Vulture’s Hill took on another name;
Emerald Hill as the killing came to fame.

This is my Halloween poem I wrote to recite at Barnes and Noble.
