Child on a Swing

I push you away
Hoping
The stronger my shove,
The faster your return
But the wind gets knocked out of me
And I crash into  dirt
When you canon backward
While I try to collect myself
Without skipping a beat, I suspect
You learn to swing alone by pumping your legs
Going higher than I would’ve let
I’m no longer the force behind you
I’m merely a speck
And with sprained wrists I move to the next
Painfully pushing, wistfully reflecting how fun it used to be when I knew they’d come back
When it was a gentle catch
Instead of an attack
