Washout

I remember when I was a younger boy
The things you’d do to me;
There was life around, it made me smile
And filled me with vitality.
But you told me stories, and I don’t know;
They appealed in a perverse way.
So I took to trying
To differ life and dying,
And I’m left with not a lot to say .

So now I’m waiting for the tub to fill;
Tonight I’ll wash the ignorance away.

You know it struck me well
That maybe tranquil
Meant I wasn’t sure about what I know,
And so I took my eye
Pointed toward the sky
And dragged the younger me in tow;
He soon wore out, got left behind
And when I tried to come back
He took forever to find.

What am I now, looking up at the ceiling?
I’m new and old and in between;
I’ve reclaimed and started new again,
A yet unheard of sort of thing.
But as the tub fills up, I know it won’t be the last
That I take some time out of the day
To reflect on what keeps me alive,
And wash the ignorance away.
