The bookends of life, birth and death,
Delineate our existence on planet Earth…
We know nothing before our first breath
And when we die; dust is all we’re worth!
Between the bookends are the lives we live;
A chapter, moments make; from chapters a book!
But ‘tis us who author and edit the narrative;
We paint self-portraits the way we want to look!
Tales we weave hinge on our points of view,
And attitudes influence how our stories end
There’ll be days full of sorrow, and we’d be blue
Ever be hopeful, for joy from heaven will descend!
Some events in our life may be beyond our control
But how we react to happenstance is in our purview
We can raise our fists to the heavens with vitriol
Or we can sip lemonade like refreshing morning dew!
Surely, we can enjoy our life to the fullest
Amass fame and wealth, without regard to anyone
Satisfy our carnal desires; scale our personal Everest;
Build memorials to celebrate our days under the sun!
But none of these things can we take beyond;
Everything will end in the inside back cover
Of our ultimate book; all will slip out of our hand
When we’re but dust; links to what we are, we sever!
Sadly, most of our books have already been written
There are many happy chapters; tho’ some are sad
But there are blank pages left; waiting for our pen
To write out a fantastic ending to our ballad!
May the life we live between the bookends,
Inspire others to write better books, happier stories!
And may our remaining pages be filled with friends
Family, love, laughter; and against the devil, victories!

That was beautiful, Vic. We make life whatever we want it to be. We have plenty of time to do it. I love to read your poems.

Awwe! Thanks so much Robert. I love reading your poems as well.

Yes, I agree. All it takes is a moment of conviction to rewrite of life's story.

What a great testimonial to a life well lived. One thing is for sure, the last chapter is written for all of us. We just don't know when that page will be turned. Great poem Vic...
