he’s the square root
of negative one
to my senses, he is
yet he’ll forever be!

a phantom, a ghost,
an imaginary man
i see him only in my dreams
yet i know, he’s close to me

he’s the square root
of negative one
mystical, not of this world
but not a fantasy

always, he listens to me
like no other man,
my guardian angel
in my ultimate reality

he’s the square root
of negative one
a benevolent spirit
my Maker has given me

to guide me each day
ever since my life begun
lead me to still waters
wherever i may be

he’s the square root
of negative one
to my senses, imaginary
but i’ll meet him surely
when my earthly stay is done...

To non-techies: In mathematics, the imaginary number "i" is the square root of negative one. An imaginary number possesses the unique property that when squared, the result is negative. For my purposes, I used it as a metaphor for "imaginary" and "out of this world".
