Skipper of the S.S. Pain

When I saw your face again that day
My heart fragmented and my mask fell away.
I stormed into the light with anger in my eyes.
I’m sick of all these cavalier people, all the lies,
The faux remorse, and the hollow cries.

My unguarded eyes fell on a bitter sight.
Locked and lingered as daylight felt like night.
My heart of hardened steel faltered in a moment.
I allowed my face to repent
An uninvited glimpse of my replacement.

Although you caught me seized by my emotion
I’ll lift my head and raise my chin because I’m the captain.
Skipper of a ship that is my life, and I won’t sink before you.
Ten fingers tighten in the middle, but I’m not one of the two.
I don’t care, I’ll raise my sails and capture the wind.
