All the Signs Were There, but We Missed It

Anxiety, like loneliness, is a signal
that something is very wrong
and amidst an epidemic of anxiety
with no end in sight
the greatest danger lies in
ridding ourselves of the anxiety
that would warn us of a fearsome danger
if only we would heed the signal

Because the paradox of anxiety
is that, in itself
anxiety is nothing to worry about

And the paradox of safety
rests in the fact that
safety isn’t the absence of danger,
it is the recognition of danger,
making the world exactly as safe
as it is dangerous
