IF He Should Die

If he should die his grief
Would surely then be gone:
This heaviness of grief,
And thus of Being,
Is grief for the many
Not just the one
Who cannot grieve for him
When he is gone.
Countless times he’d risen
From his bed
With her beside him
Head to head,
Except the once when he is dead
His soul at last to her is fled.
