Muscles

When you get to grips
With brick or stone, with tools,
Drilling holes, or re-shaping things,
To fix a light outside, perhaps,
Or laying paving slabs
After clearing shrubs away
And flattening the earth,
Or any other task
Involving hands and tools
And earth materials,
You will discover a rhythm,
A natural grace of movement
Of your body balanced and swung
By the weighty things you handle,
And you will be at one
With yourself knowing that
Your muscles, though dormant,
Were evolved for this kind of work,
And you will come to know
A physical and mental satisfaction
You did not think existed.
