Hand-Me-Down

Tiny socks unfold
memories I can’t contain
onesies soft and worn
held him close through night and morn
now the past and tears are sworn

Stack of folded years
each stitch a gentle whisper
how could he have grown
so much, when it feels unknown
like just yesterday had flown

Now his brother stirs
ready for hand-me-down love
same clothes, same embrace
yet a different time and face
heartstrings pull in tender grace!

My grandniece who’s expecting a second baby (another son) wrote the following message in Facebook. I converted what she posted into the above poem. I’m hoping the poem did justice to her feelings. “Sorting through Max’s old baby clothes made me tear up. I can’t believe he was once that small—fitting into those tiny onesies and little socks. It feels like just yesterday I was dressing him in them, and now his little brother will be wearing the same outfits. Time is moving so fast, and it’s both beautiful and bittersweet.”
