Autumn leaves lay on the ground
All gathered in a four-foot mound
A cold breeze lifted some around
The world’s truly winter-bound
Alas! The non-evergreens are bare
There’s a damp chill in the air
All forest creatures seem aware;
Hoarding provisions in their lair…
The night hours get much longer
All the way to the end of December;
The sun seems farther and smaller,
And frost will come sooner or later
But holiday carols can be heard,
Joy in our hearts, rightly stirred
As we hum along, not saying a word
And quietly, presents we prepared
So it happened on a midnight clear
A long time ago, and now we cheer!
We celebrate each and every year
Even when the cold winter’s here!
