voices joined together

I made my way to the crossroads
at the very edge of town
around that magic demi hour
when the sun goes down
old newspaper headlines
fluttered in the trees
Times New Roman ranting
about the coming disease

so I settled on a rock stone
and prepared for the night
I gathered up my mojo
and readied for the fight
around the hour of midnight
I heard a stranger say
everything is changing
in a fundamental way

the seasons are all changing
as the glaciers recede
the monsoon and harvest
no longer guaranteed
now love is just an equation
of vanity and greed
multi national pharmaeuticals
have patented our seed

the dust no longer settles
no matter how it rains
flashing lights and beta waves
have hypnotised the brain
the billboards are all rusting
and bleeding into drains
that connect to the oceans
where salmon go insane

the harbour master’s suicide
never made the news
the pea green boats all drifting
were manned by fishbone crews
arguments were everywhere
so many points of view
everyone was certain
they were the chosen few

and yet there was a flicker!
a tiny ray of hope
some random poet somewhere
was typing up his dope
how just before the sunrise
around a dying fire
voices joined together
before it all expired
