Solitude

On top the counter
Within a cage
The dearest songbird sat
Perked and quiet
Without a sound
She peeked out from the bars
Wishing to see the land of trees
She’d so often heard about
Not once had she seen
The sprouting of buds
Or the glow of a sun going down
Never had she strayed to find
A fawn peering out
The songbird sat in solitude
Forever knowing that
Without a key to the latch
She’d never see the stars
