Sadness

A love poem

#13

Melancholy cradles me yet
Folded in arms of gentle sorrow.
My baleful companion through the years.
You were always there for me.

When times were dark, you flickered light to lure me.
When the silence hissed you spoke to me, saving me from solitude.

You never failed to remind me of my wrongs.
To encourage me with self reproach.
Foiling effort for failure’s fear

Safe with you, down here, we were.
You never left me, and I loved you for it.

But now I see
You never loved me.
It was you who needed me,
You could not face the light. Alone.
Naked and frail, you clung to my back. Not the succour of my soul.
A parasite to kill my hope.

And after me, there would be others, drawn to the beguiling whispers of your wiles.
To be discarded each in turn,
When you were sated.

It’s over,
leave me to suffer,
In the muddy melee of my mind.
Expelled with a smile.
kindling the memory of our unhappiest moments, to stave off your offspring and their hunger.
