The Enemy Within

To those battling depression

#17

Keep your enemies closer
Advised Sun Tzu,
Mine couldn’t dwell any nearer.
Who Knew?

It presides within me
Couched atop in a bone pot.
From it’s vantage point it sees
The details, the minutiae,

With which, to interrogate
And torture me in the wee
Small hours, endlessly.
There’s no escape.

I smother it with drugs
And pills and pain.
It merely shrugs, you see
A time will come again,

Unfettered it will spew
It’s poison.
Stiletto knifing hope and joy
And reason.

My only chance?
Befriend my bully.
Myself the fool to jape and prance
And hope to occupy it fully.
And live in fear.
