Shadows

first poem

The shadows follow him as he walks
The voices of the shadows
Hide in the cracks of his mind
His pain is visible to all who see
But no one knows what he’s done
Who he has hurt
Who he has lost
The screams invade his dreams
The drugs will find his veins
And silence will fall.
But the shadows remain
The voices turn to faces
Watching him spiral
Watching him fall
The streets call his name.
Music fills his head,
The drugs work their magic
The world is full of wonder
The screams are hidden
But he doesn’t see what the shadows can

He peels himself off the ground
The light burns his eyes
His head pounds
The stench of vomit fills his nostrils.
He stumbles out of the street
He tries to find his way home
The air his filled with confusion
His pain is back
The drugs have abandoned him
The voices begin to scream again
The faces have disappeared into the shadows
All he is left with is the screaming
He is alone.
He finds his way home
His head hits the pillow
The voices scream as darkness falls
The drugs find his veins
And silence will fall
The streets call his name
The shadows have claimed a new victim.
