Wonderland

Not knowing the outcome would resemble the past

She refused to confront the cold shadow cast

Both ravishing & righteous she remained tranquil

For what she encountered left her sane & still.

A mystical feeling surrounded her frame

Becoming the opponent in her very own game

Losing all virtuous aspects of self

Gaining corruptive contingents of stealth

A domineering trance forced her further along

The lavish yet frugal crave to belong

Darker and deeper pathways aligned

Memoirs and nightmares only dreaming she’d find.

The irresistible dance; hypnotizing her stride

Is surely left leaving her eyes opened wide

Broadcasting her soul, unsure if she’s alive

Pulse picks up pace; will she ever arrive.

The lifeless smile which claims her face

Misleads the others with its warm embrace

A production naive of its opening act

Though truly and surely they’ve formed a pact

Watching in awe no longer she fights

Surrendering her limbs, sworn to new heights.

(2013)

I wrote this poem while listening to "Sound of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel. I immediately pictured Alice from Alice in Wonderland, but in a very dark and lonesome forest setting. The poem is a metaphor of her being forced ito the present, and she's terrified. The trees are pulling her in. She's excited, but terrified. The dark represents the past.
