Prelude to a Poem

Prelude to a poem, rhyming rivers flowing
around the bends in an effervescent glowing

and in silken chutes from heaven’s doors,
sliding upward and down to earthen floors,

into auditory caves from melodic streaming
and oceans of rapture with spirits beaming

announcing the coming of an exotic sound
of words melted down and spread all round

into stories that lift the spirit into the clouds
that rides with the wind above the earthly crowds

that singes the skin from volcanic fires
and brings to the ears the demonic choirs

or a gentle lullaby that soothes the anxiety
that sends you adrift on a glassy sea

a story that stays with you every day
that mothers you and shows you the way

from a prelude dressed up in ceremonial flair
waving its banners in the quixotic air

sweetened by the spices of exotic gardens
a potpourri of scents and aromatic blends

a fanfare to the threshold of an uplifting paradise
a fire ignited to spread and melt the ice

a prelude leading to a forthcoming poem
a golden avenue to your new poetic home
oh sweet prelude, oh sweet prelude
