Spears in the Mind

Spears readied to slaughter the neighbor’s pig
from outside his cave; hence,
the dawning of the age of warfare,
then warriors on their steeds charging
in the heat of the battle
with their bloody spears outstretched,

writers stationed at their desks
with spears in their cathartic pens,
imaginary battles waged in their thoughts,
their passion running, aggression carried out,
spilling their thoughts onto the parchment,
playing war with no enemy to fear,
no fear of retaliation,
an easy victory gained,

but a war in the soul waged,
spears ingrained in the minds
of the youths in their carefree days,
an enemy inherited through the restlessness,
the maturation of the body but not the mind,
the peace in the soul irrelevant; therefore, unsought,
the satisfaction of the senses gained with
the sweet rivers of the adrenalin running,
the thrill of their effect employed,
the outcome of their actions prone to vengeance,
the state of the world as it has always
been and will ever be
until . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
