Mother

Mother

The first time, when I glimpsed at your angelic and divine face,
When I felt scared, I clenched tightly on to your finger,
It is because of mothers, we still exist as a human race,
In this world full of hatred and violence, we have managed to linger.

Mother, you have always loved, protected, cared and nurtured,
You taught me the difference between the right and wrong,
You are like a big shady tree, under which I grew and matured,
I was a lifeless lyric, but you composed me into a mellifluous song.

People pray to God while they sing, chant and kneel,
Mother, it is around you, the true Godliness I feel.
Your unconditional love is a debt which I can never repay,
On this Mother’s Day, thank you, and I love you is all I want to say.

(2014)

I have dedicated this poem to my Mother. Not only she gave birth to me, but she also loved, nurtured and protected me. There is a saying in India, "If heaven does exist, then it does under the feet of a mother." I would be honoured if you want to copy this poem and give it to your mother. Please feel free!
