Agonized
Agonized thoughts flooded consciousness
While she lay motionless in bed tonight
Years flashed back from memory banks
Tears well; as remorse and regret both ignite
For years she stayed despite the problems
Hoping the relationship, love will nurture
But in the end, everything is for naught
Time to accept, her efforts a total failure
She should have seen; but foresight’s blind
From the start, it’s been a one-way street
She fell for him; totally, unconditionally
Though he treated her like dirt at his feet
Sadly, love deposited scales in her eyes
Virtual blindfolds; hence she failed to see
She assigned him virtues when there’s none
Her love made him heroic and blemish-free
Several tragic years hence, she has enough
Things won’t change, no matter how she tried
Now it’s time she loves herself once again
Recapture self-respect and long-lost pride!
Tonight, bags are packed; no more turning back
Tomorrow, she’ll be thousands of miles away
To begin life anew, while there’s still time
Time to love herself starting from today!
She looked left, to the empty side of the bed
And uttered a silent farewell to a ghost
Agonized tears fell, for she’s in mourning
For someone a long time ago she has lost!
A great weight lifted off her chest
And a rush of adrenalin; a sudden thrill
As she dreams of what tomorrow will bring
Take on the future, headlong she will!
