The Desert

Almost silent,
A numbing hum.
It is a cold cloudless night.
A brilliant bone-white moon hovers
amidst stars upon stars upon stars.

A sudden scrabbling movement,
the familiar sound of the scorpion.
I know he is a mortal enemy,
yet he somehow seems my friend.

I must be wary where and how I step.
This is his territory.
I am the intruder.
Though it seems my destined home
these long days and longer nights.
