Language of the Speechless

I cannot grasp the written word
Nor can my muzzle form the spoken
But that is not to say I can’t understand

You spell it with strange written symbols
An L, an O, a V, and an E
But I can only use gestures
A nudge here, a lick on your hand,
And a tender gaze from my eyes to yours

Maybe I can’t chew my food nor sip my water
But you know to play when I wag my tail
And I know to lay my head on your lap
When tears rain from your human eyes
