Sunflowers in the Balkans

In the depth of winter greyness
bare vines grown old with the weight of age
forgotten for as long as young minds can remember
seen only in memories of old men and women
collecting their fruit
to press juices together
with laughter and song
knowing that joy awaits them.

Without sunflowers to brighten and gladden
a landscape denuded of colour and change
deep sadness grips spirits puzzling cold
waiting for another touch
to welcome summer to their land
golden beams through froth clouds
matched by the strange joy
of brilliant sunflowers gleefully proud.

Sunflowers in the Balkans
calling out to each other
in merriment, forgetting grey
lost in the moment of another season
a language speaking
words unheard in solemn winter
forgetting the loveliness of hearts
reflecting the glow of sun on the land.
