Cherry Orchards

(To a girl that I used to know)

She hid behind
cherry orchards and
smelled of old vanilla-flavored
coffee (last Sunday was
the last time she would
let him see her cry.)
She carried
a basket of letters
but kept them buried
deep inside.

She glanced at
every stranger that
walked past;
sometimes she would
ask them for the time.
But they didn’t
know that she wanted
so much more
than that.

In the mornings
she wished she was
brave enough to tell him
to stay.
(The sun was never
bright enough
but the stars always
blinded her
eyes.)

She hid behind
cherry orchards
and always wondered
why.
