What I Meant To Tell You Before I Left

December left some of her frigidness when she left
at the end of the year when we parted, and I’ve
been cold to everyone for the past few weeks as well.
If I had stayed in town I think The New York Times
would have written a story about us
and they would call it ‘Long lost lovers find their
way back to each other after years of grieving’
and people would come up to us while we
are walking through town and ask us what the secret is
to making love last.
I would have the perfect anniversary present for
you, a book latched together with all
of your handwritten letters,
the ones you sent while you were away,
even though we don’t like to celebrate that kind of thing
because you said it was for insecure couples
that feel they need to prove their love.
Still, I wish you had something to give me that night
when my plane was about to depart and I asked you
if things were going to change.
