War Cry

We are crying
Our tears dyed by blood-splattered rain
We know our screams are echoing out, we know our cries are echoing loud, but no one answers us all the same
We know that the action may be useless, because the reason we cry is painfully known
We just square our shoulders and straighten our backs, following a routine for blacks that’s been conditioned, not newly shown
We go to bed at night, this sentence digging like a knife, deeper in our hearts that were paralyzed, trapped by hate and fear
We rise up, stand tall, and watch our men as they fall in a cycle that frequents like seasons in a year
We cry out, we cry loud, we know our screams are echoing out, but no one answers or responds all the same
We are aware, we’ve found out, we know you’re listening and the secrets out, that you’ve had a front row-seat to this dehumanizing pain
We’re done wavering, we’re not backing out, if you can hear us crying out, step up, do not step down, this issue cannot simply be pushed aside or erased
We’re gonna keep fighting, we’re gonna keep crying, and we know there are some that will keep on trying to knock us down, but our soul will keep on flying amid this blood-splattered rain
We’re gonna keep rising, we’re never giving up fighting, until the message goes beyond writing, and becomes a reality not a dream repeated the same
It doesn’t matter what you look like, it doesn’t matter which race you come from, equality is a right, not just something one man has heard of, and it’s time we let it fully reign
