When

When we had nets on the ends of canes
And jam jars to put the tiddlers in,
When we had a sixpence for pocket money,
And short trousers with pockets to put things in,

When we walked through fields to a river
And marvelled at the deep and our reflections,
When we took off our shoes and socks
And dallied in the summer shallows,

When we were free in a window of time
And had returned to our roots of being,
When we were fanned by warm breezes
And caressed by the travelling sun,

When we were young and brave and curious
And stripped to our underpants and swam,
When we surged against the current
And stopped ourselves from being swept away,

When we were tired through our efforts
And proud too of standing up to something,
When we were looking for a challenge,
And all that was to come.
